ask me about my funny scout niblet story someday
okay I’m game
ok so we fly to melbourne where we’re playing a show with her that night. i step outside for a smoke while waiting for our bags and notice among the throngs of people coming and going a woman wearing an oversized dayglo orange jumpsuit, a tarmac worker or possibly firefighter headed home after finishing her shift, i imagine. watching her i’m struck by the thought i’ve always had in airports about the enormousness of the world, these thousands of people’s paths that intersect for a moment and possibly never again, each one of them representing an entire lifetime with its own stories, joys, hardships, dramas. we collect our bags, procure the rental van, pick up the backline for the show and drive clear across town to the venue, a pub on the far side of the city. hours after leaving the airport, waiting to soundcheck in the empty bar, i look up and who do you suppose walks through the door yes the orange jumpsuit woman scout niblet.
(it was only upon later reflection that i realized yeah duh, you don’t generally see fully-uniformed airport employees leaving work through the arrivals doors)7 months ago
